Appreciation of music is something most of us share. The sound of a particular instrument or a verse from a song can transport us back into a memory, remind us of a special moment. Even as children, many of us fell asleep to the calming melody of a lullaby.

As the most universal medium in the world, music has many promising neurological and physiological effects. However, research suggests that music is most impactful in sleep and relaxation. Especially for those who struggle with falling or staying asleep, which is often associated with stress and anxiety. When we look at our health and well-being from a holistic point of view, we can very easily draw it all back to sleep. It’s a well-known fact that insufficient sleep in both quality and quantity can be the core of many health-related issues. And so, in our continuous pursuit to understand the true benefits of a good night’s rest, we embarked on understanding the impact of music on sleep.

 

Savoir London Beds has had the opportunity to meet with a multi-award-winning violinist, Elly Suh, who shared with Savoir the impact music has had on her life. When they sit down to talk, there’s a particular element of calmness to Elly. She begins every sentence with a deep, deliberate breath. Almost like she’s about to perform for us, but instead of the violin, she uses her voice. Like a Savoir craftsman, for Elly, perfecting the art of craftsmanship is the essence of her being. She takes hours and sometimes even years to learn each note, each movement, and each sound. The dedication and precision of which deliver a truly extraordinary result.

 

What’s most striking about Elly is that when she performs, she does so with what seems like remarkable ease. The beautiful, swift movements of her hands as she graces the bow against the strings. To us, listeners, they feel so effortless. And perhaps that’s precisely why classical music has such a magical and relaxing effect on its listeners.

DISCOVER THE POWERFUL IMPACT OF MUSIC ON SLEEP AND RELAXATION

The science of sleep and music

In a recent study led by Deutsches Ärzteblatt, a German magazine, the team performed a test on 120 individuals. 60 of those were randomly assigned to listen to various compositions by Mozart, Strauss, or ABBA for 25 minutes. The remaining 60 were left to relax in complete silence. After 25 minutes tests on blood pressure and cortisol levels were performed. For those who were listening to Mozart, their blood pressure was the lowest, as were their cortisol levels. Similar results were shown in those who listened to Strauss, however, those who listened to ABBA or no music at all showed no significant changes in their results.

Cortisol is a hormone responsible for our body’s response to stress. When its levels increase, we feel the effects of stress more. This very often leads to difficulty in relaxing and having a hard time falling asleep. Music naturally relaxes our mind and body, and when our muscles are relaxed enough, the body slows down cortisol production and eventually stops.

Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot more power to music than lowering our stress levels. Another study also found that a chemical called dopamine was released when participants listened to the music they enjoyed. Dopamine is a hormone responsible for the feeling of joy, excitement and happiness. When that feeling is sparked, our stress levels naturally decrease, allowing our mind and body to ease.

Although most people experienced an increase in dopamine when listening to their favourite song, classical music remains the most dominant genre. Specifically, songs by some of the most recognised artists, like Mozart, Debussy and Strauss. At Savoir, we always favour natural methods. ENJOY CLASSICAL MUSIC BEFORE BEDTIME FOR A RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP

Sound Asleep

To introduce music to your bedtime routine, start by creating a calm ambience in your bedroom. Set aside 45 minutes before bed, dim your lights, and allow yourself to get comfortable with no distractions. Playing the music out loud, instead of in your headphones will further build on the calming ambience. When choosing your playlist, it’s important to include pieces that remain between 60-100 beats per minute. This is because this tempo mimics our resting heart rate.

A handful of Niccolò Paganini’s caprices sit within the preferred beats-per-minute speed, like the Caprice No.4 Do menor and Caprice No.5 in A Minor, Op.1. Chopin’s Waltz in A Minor, No.11 and Bach’s Concerto in D Minor, BMV 974: II are also two great pieces worth considering adding to your playlist.

Celebrating the simple pleasure of being in bed, Savoir London Beds’ new campaign ‘A Place to Dream’ features a couple dedicated to craft: Elly Suh, violinist and Florian Leonhard, violin maker.

As a violinist and a violin maker, Elly Suh and Florian Leonhard are soul mates of each other’s life journeys. Elly, a solo violinist and leading Paganini interpreter of her generation, shares the same language of music with Florian, whose entire life is devoted to handcrafting violins and who has become a well-known and trusted figure in violin-making and authentication. They shine in their respective fields while mirroring and helping each other hone their skills in crafts: Elly is a craftswoman of beautiful sound and Florian is the craftsman of the finest instruments in the world.

Elly Suh is celebrated as one of the leading Paganini interpreters of her generation and is currently undertaking a major recording project of Niccolo Paganini’s 24 Caprices for Solo Violin. Reflecting her modern creative spirit and innovative approach to music, the Pagonino Vault project is a narrative audio-visual album.

Elly grew up in Seoul and started playing the violin at the age of five. Recognised as possessing a fiercely prodigious talent, she went on to enter The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division in New York at just 10 years old. More than two decades on, Elly has mastered her craft, playing on a Guarneri del Gesù violin and bringing her own unique creative twist to every performance.

Florian Leonhard has a strong classic background in violin making and restoration, and his love for old Italian instruments has enabled him to develop his expertise in stringed instruments. Florian grew up in Düsseldorf in Germany. At just 19, Florian began his luthier training at Mittenwald; a school known for preserving the art and tradition of violin making. This formed the foundations of his career as a luthier. He went on to work for well-known violin dealers, where he worked as Head Restorer. Now, he is a well-known and trusted figure in violin-making and authentication, providing instruments and certification to artists all over the world.

There is a saying: “You are what you eat.” What you eat determines who you are. What you eat also determines whether you sleep well or not. Our diet is closely related to our sleep. Poor sleep quality will affect our appetite. Eating habits will also affect sleep quality conversely.

Beyond Sleep is honored to invite Tiffany Shek, Registered Dietitian (UK), to explore the relationship between diet and sleep.

Tiffany Shek is a Registered Dietitian (UK) who is passionate about the science of nutrition and the art of great food.

Academically, she obtained Master’s of Science in Nutrition at King’s College London, and her Postgraduate Degree in Dietetics at HKU SPACE thereafter. Between her years of studying, Tiffany attended Matthew Kenney Culinary School in Los Angeles, where she explored innovative ways to incorporate more plant-based ingredients into one’s diet.

She also worked in several restaurants in Hong Kong and was the founder of Grain of Salt, the first evidence-based holistic wellness hub in Hong Kong.

What is the biggest myth about sleep and diet?

The biggest myth is drinking alcohol before bed as a sleep aid. Actually, this is the most common misunderstanding, when in fact alcohol has the opposite effect.

Alcohol might help you fall asleep but it disrupts the REM (Rapid Eye Moment) cycle, which means you will get a lower quality of sleep. Alcohol has also been shown to supress the body’s production of melatonin, which is the hormone in charge of encouraging deeper sleep with reduced disturbances.

Why do we feel hungrier after a poor night's sleep?

One hypothesis for increased hunger after a poor night’s sleep is change of appetite-related hormones, namely leptin and  ghrelin. Few studies has shown a decrease in leptin, the hunger-supressing hormone, accompanied by an increase in ghrelin, the appetite-stimulating hormones, after sleep restriction (Dashti et al., 2015).

Sleep deprivation has also shown to blunt the activity of appetitive evaluation regions of the brain, leading to a significant increased desire for intake of food, especially highly palatable, high-calorie foods and snacks (Greer et al., 2013).

Mediterranean Diet

Are there any diets that can help improve our sleep?

In general, adopting a Mediterranean Diet can help improve our sleep. This Diet focuses on healthy whole foods, such as plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains (i.e. brown rice, whole-wheat, barley).

As for protein-rich options, the diet places emphasis on legumes and beans, such as chickpeas, kidney beans or lentils, fish and seafood, as well as nuts and seeds, which are high in good fats. Whilst wine can be consumed in moderation, remember not to have alcohol close to bedtime, as it can disrupt sleep.

What food and drink can interfere with our sleep?

It is common knowledge that caffeine, such as from tea and coffee, is a stimulant and helps us feel more alert. Energy drinks, pre-workout drinks and soft drinks are also hidden sources of caffeine – consuming these beverages near bedtime may lead to difficulty in falling asleep.

Caffeine has a half-life of about 5 hours, so the other half of the caffeine you consumed can last much longer. It is generally recommended to refrain from caffeine at least 6 hours before bedtime.

Any other dietary advice for us to improve our sleep quality?     

Having Tart Cherry juice before sleep have been shown to improve sleeping time and quality in healthy adults, as tart cherries are one of the few known food sources of melatonin, a molecule that is critical in regulating the sleep-wake cycle in humans. You can start with a small amount of concentrated tart cherry juice, such as 30ml before bedtime to enhance your sleep, as well as the benefit from the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the fruit.

Have you ever been annoyed by handling old beddings no longer needed? Given that they are still in good condition to use, throwing them away would generate waste and increase the burden of landfills. According to the statistic announced by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department in 2020, there were more than 6,844 tonnes of daily domestic waste generated on average, while textile waste was estimated to be at 163 tonnes per day. These alarming data have reflected the negative consequences posed to our environment.

This year marks our 10th anniversary, Beyond Sleep is delighted to be partnered with Master Mattress and the charity organization, Big Tree Animal Sanctuary and Adoption Centre Limited (hereinafter referred to as “Big Tree”) to organize old beddings recycling and repurposing schemes for the first time, hope to give them a new life and contribute to a sustainable future.

From now until Nov 30, 2022, Beyond Sleep will dispose of old mattresses for free for customers who purchase mattresses and deliver them to Master Mattress for effective recycling procedures. Through maintenance or recycling, the life of mattresses will be extended, and hope to minimize the environmental waste and pollution problem and help the people in need.

Mattresses still in good condition: Refurbished and resold to low-income families and social welfare organizations at low prices.

Introduction of Master Mattress

Founded in 2015, Master Mattress provides mattress maintenance and recycling services for the public. They hope to alter the existing consumption trend of society and motivate citizens to extend the products’ life by repairing to diminish unnecessary waste to alleviate the burden of landfills. Besides, Master Mattress also would love to contribute to society by helping people in need.

Introduction of Big Tree

Since 1985, Big Tree Animal Sanctuary and Adoption Centre Limited has been rescuing stray animals and taking care of them. Big Tree was officially established and registered as a charity organization in 2012 to rescue and care for stray and abandoned animals and promote animal care to the public. The name “Big Tree” symbolizes “good shade under the big tree”, meaning offering stray animals a warm and safe home. Big Tree aims to rescue as many animals as possible, build a shelter for homeless pets, and take medical care of abandoned ones. Moreover, they also promote the message of loving the animals through organizing different events and educating the public about Animal Rights.

We spend 1/3 of our lives in bed, so there is no wonder that bedding products are one of the most worthwhile investments in our lives. Bed sheets are our most intimate sleeping companions, also affecting our sleep quality. Not only do we need to select high-quality beddings, but we also need to wash them frequently and take good care of them to prolong their lifespan and maintain good quality. And here comes the question: How should we wash and take care of our bed linens?

1. Wash and change bed sheets frequently

Bedding is easy to accumulate dust, dander, grease, sweat, etc. If you do not wash and change the bed sheets for a long time, a large number of bacteria will breed, and also attract a lot of dust mites, reptiles, and other allergens, which may cause your skin to be allergic and induce asthma. We recommend washing and changing the bed sheets once a week or at least every two weeks, especially the pillowcases, which are in direct contact with our faces and need to be changed at least once a week. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, daily cleansing is ideal.

2. Pay attention to the care labels

Don’t forget to follow the instructions on the care labels to wash your bed sheets. Each bed sheet may have special ways to care based on its fabric, weaving, thread count, and dying. The care label helps you to understand the specific information.

3. Pay attention to the water temperature when washing 

If your bed sheets are made with natural materials, you should wash them at or below 40 °C, the gentle warm temperature can reduce damage to the sheets and avoid shrinkage or deformation of the fabric, it is good enough to dissolve sebum and wash away dirt.

4. Use mild laundry detergent

It is suggested to use non-biological detergents that do not contain optical brighteners, bleaches, or enzymes, as these chemicals destroy natural materials such as wool and silk, cause fabrics to pill, and could aggravate eczema and skin allergy. Also, it is not suggested to use fabric softener because it would reduce beddings’ absorbency and breathability. Instead, you may consider using eco-friendly laundry detergent to maintain your bed linens and also a good choice for a sustainable lifestyle.

5. Dry your bed sheets naturally

Sunlight is the most natural fungicide. We suggest you air dry your bed sheets naturally by indirect sunlight and place it in a ventilated place. Do not let your bed sheets be directly exposed to the sunlight or for a long time to avoid fiber embrittlement.

6. Avoid using tumble dryer 

Avoid using tumble dryers because they would cause shrinkage, especially for pure-cotton bed sheets. Even if the care label mentions the tumble dryer is allowed to use, you should select the low temperature to reduce shrinkage and deformation. If you need to iron your bed sheets, also remember to keep the temperature low to avoid fibers damage. It is suggested to turn over those colorful bed linens when ironing them. If there is embroidery on your linens, you can iron it with a cloth on top of it to maintain the embroidery.

7. Store your linens in a cool and dry place

High humidity in Hong Kong during spring and summer, you should fold your bed sheets naturally and place them in a ventilated and dry area. Bamboo charcoal, dehumidifying beads, insect repellent tablets, etc. can be added to reduce moisture and pest damage. Mothballs are toxic, so it is not recommended to store them with bedding.

There are various choices of bed linen fabric. Common fabrics in the market include cotton, polyester, silk, linen, etc.

Polyester is a kind of artificial fabric that is comparatively cheap and durable. However, polyester is not breathable and non-biodegradable. 4. Size

It is essential to choose bed sheets in the correct size. You are recommended to select a bed sheet the length and width are longer than your mattress by at least 70 cm.
