The registered nutritionist Tiffany Shek explored The Relationship Between Sleep And Diet with us in the previous chapter of the “ASK THE EXPERTS” series, we have received widespread attention and positive feedback from customers on it. Good sleep quality is crucial for both physical health and mental well-being. Selecting the right pillow is as important as choosing the right mattress in maintaining good sleep quality.

However, with a wide variety of pillows available on the market, how to choose the right pillow that suits our needs? Therefore, in the second chapter of the “ASK THE EXPERTS” series, we have invited the Co-founder and Executive Director of Beyond Sleep, Kitrina Wong, to tell us more about how to choose your perfect pillow, helping you improve your sleep quality and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

2nd Chapter of 「ASK THE EXPERTS」: How To Choose Your Perfect Pillow?

Kitrina Wong's Bio

Kitrina graduated with a Biochemistry and Law degree from King’s College London and BPP Law School London respectively. After graduation, she joined her family’s fashion manufacturing industry, which laid the foundation for her entrepreneurship. However, she realized that fast fashion creates lots of environmental problems, which inspired her to move on to do something that can bring a positive impact on our world.

She understood that the fast-paced urban lifestyle brings stress to people, which affects their sleep quality. In 2015, she joined Noblesse Lifestyle Group, where she learned about the craftsmanship of high-quality bedding and knowledge of sleep health. She hoped to use her experiences and professional knowledge to provide customers with the most natural and high-quality sleep, and to bring positive influence to society. She also encourages everyone to pursue a sustainable lifestyle and create a better future together.

Why choosing the right pillow is essential for maintaining good sleep quality?

Sleeping takes up one-third of our lives. Bedding can be said to be one of our important companions in life. An ideal pillow can help us rest our fatigued neck muscles and ligaments during sleep after a long day’s work. However, a wrong pillow can easily lead to poor sleeping posture, which can cause various problems such as neck and shoulder pain, headaches, and dizziness in the long run, affecting overall sleep quality, as well as our physical health and daily life.

The right pillow can help you:

1. Reduce neck and back pain:

A pillow that is too high or too low can put your head and neck in an unnatural position, increasing the risk of neck and back pain.

2. Improve breathing

Choosing a pillow that is suitable for your sleeping position and body shape can help you breathe more easily. For example, if you are a side sleeper, choosing a higher pillow can keep your head and neck level, reducing breathing issues.

3. Reduce snoring

A suitable pillow can also reduce the risk of snoring. If you snore, it may be due to your head and neck being in an incorrect position, affecting your breathing.

How to choose your perfect pillow?

Choosing the right pillow is a very personal process, but here are some tips to help you choose the right pillow:

  1.

1. Consider your sleeping position

Your sleeping position will influence the type of pillow you need. If you are a side sleeper, you may need a higher pillow to support your head and neck. If you are a back sleeper, you may need a flatter pillow to keep your head and neck in a natural position. If you are a stomach sleeper, you may need a thinner pillow to avoid twisting your neck.

2. Consider your body shape

Your body shape can affect the size and shape of the pillow you need. If you have broad shoulders, you may need a wider pillow to support your head and shoulders. If your head is smaller, you may need a smaller pillow to prevent your head from moving around while you sleep.

3. Consider the filling material

Pillows can be filled with different materials such as memory foam, down, feathers, cotton, and polyester fiber. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, down and feathers can provide soft support, but may not be suitable for people with allergies. Polyester fiber can provide firmer support, but may not be as comfortable as other filling materials.

Before purchasing a pillow, it is recommended to try it out in the showroom to make sure it is comfortable and provides adequate support.

Any additional things to consider when choosing the pillow?

Sure, here are some additional things to consider when choosing the pillow:

1. Pillow density:

The density of the pillow refers to how much support it provides. A pillow that is too soft or too firm can affect your sleep quality. Memory foam pillows provide good support but may be too firm for some people, while down pillows can be too soft for others.

2. Pillow height:

The height of the pillow should be appropriate for your sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, a higher pillow can keep your head and neck level, while a flatter pillow may be suitable if you sleep on your back.

3. Pillow breathability:

A breathable pillow can help regulate your body temperature and prevent overheating. Pillows made of natural materials like cotton and bamboo are more breathable than synthetic materials.

4. Personal allergies:

If you have allergies, you can choose hypoallergenic pillows, such as vegan pillows made from bamboo fibers or maize fibers. These natural components can also help regulate temperature and moisture, creating an ideal sleep environment

5. Pillow shape:

Some specially designed pillows are tailored to specific sleeping positions, such as U-shaped ergonomic pillows that provide targeted support for the shoulders and neck, making them ideal for side sleepers.

In addition, it is important to regularly replace pillows to maintain their cleanliness and support function. Generally, pillows should be replaced every 1 to 2 years, depending on usage frequency and the material of the pillow.
